Most people have heard of Seven Pillars of Wisdom by T.E. Lawrence (a.k.a. "Lawrence of Arabia"), and possibly its condensed version, Revolt in the Desert. Another book, published only after Lawrence's death, was The Mint, describing his life in the ranks of the British military in the post-WW I years. After completing this translation of The Odyssey (which he wrote from 1928-1931), Lawrence evidently composed no other works of literature. But The Odyssey by Lawrence is unique in this way: Late in the year 1927 he was approached by Ralph Isham, on behalf of American typographer Bruce Rogers, as to the possibility of him, for the amount of 800 British Pounds, composing a new translation of The Odyssey. Having read Seven Pillars of Wisdom, Rogers had realized that, "Here, at last was a man who could make Homer live again -- a man of action who was also a scholar and who could write swift and graphic English." So here we have the unique translation of one of history's most remarkable stories, coming alive again from the pen and mind of one of the most amazing figures of the first decades of the 20th century. Through T.E. Lawrence's genius (though under the pen name of Shaw), we gain new insights of Homer.
