More Than Human

I found this book while browsing at my local library, brought it home and ordered my own copy some 10 mins later. The photographs are absolutely incredible as is their reproduction - the detail defies description with the layout design being outstanding. The printing, done in Belgium, has to be among the very best I've seen possibly the equivalent of an Apple Retina screen reduced to paper. Why not 5 stars? Firstly, while there are very nice thumbnails of each photo indicating where they were taken, there is no camera information which is a pity. Secondly and more importantly is the text by Lewis Blackwell which is mostly irritating psychobabble verging on pretentious drivel- "we are not looking at animals....etc etc". A gorgeous book and given its quality reasonably priced.

This book will keep you enthralled for hours on end...the photography is not only magnificent, it is truly inspired.I like how certain characteristics and details of the animals are honed in on and put in a sequence. The photographer is much more than a photographer here. He leads us to opening up our eyes far beyond what they have been able to see before.I've never had an experience like this looking at pictures before! I've always thought looking at life in person is the best way to learn about it and know it. This book has shown me that the moments caught by an inspired mind can be more far-reaching than the fleeting glimpses we see in our everyday world.I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to understand life and how wonderful it is!

The photographs are exquisite, the content of the text is informative and written in a style easy to understand. However, the font is so small and light that it doesn't invite reading. All the pages of text are at least 3/4 blank. The text takes up one small corner in an otherwise blank page. We bought this for a granddaughter's 13th birthday. She is thrilled with it, but I noticed as people looked through it they didn't stop to read the text. Even when they wanted more information about the photograph. This is a glaring fault in an otherwise stellar achievement.

I kept putting off buying the book because something else always seemed more important, then I finally treated myself. This huge book is filled with glorious full page photos and bits of information about the wonderful creatures within it. I want to share it with everyone, yet I don't want to let it out of my reach.

This book, filled with amazing photographs by Tim Flach, is like a prayer. It takes my breath away with its stunning depictions of our fellow animals. Flach's photographs are a mystery - how does he get them? He introduces his audience to such tender moments and the text by Lewis Blackwell offers information to supplement these purely visual expressions of hope. I think it is impossible to look through this book - to really look at these photographs - and not feel how much like us our fellow citizens are, and how intricately related we all are on this fragile planet. Not just incidentally, all those thoughts raise heartbreaking questions regarding how we treat all these other earthlings.

My sister-in-law photographs animals at a shelter and has a special affinity for wild beasts who, in her case, are in rehab for release, which she documents via photos. She was absolutely delighted with this book, saying it was the best she had ever seen. The photography is beyond compare and is inspiring for even those who don't go gaga over animals.This is an enchanting coffee table book, beautifully bound with heavy paper and high quality. Good for any animal lover or photographer in your life.

The moment I saw this photographer's work online I knew I'd seen the epitome of animal photography. Nothing compares. I don't know how he does it but it's absolutely enchanting. I bought this book as a gift and I'll be getting one for myself. At the birthday party, it became the center of attention. Everyone was incredulous and the group ranged in ages from 14 to 75. For anyone who loves animals, photography, art, attention to detail - this is a lifelong treasure.

Beautiful photos from cover to cover. I sat with each of my grandchildren, one by one, and we oohed and awwed at every page and talked about everything. Time very well spent. They LOVED guessing on some of the subjects and we all learned together about a huge variety of interesting things. Completely delightful! This book will remain on our coffee table for everyone to admire over and over. Awesome!

This book is an amazing collection of photographs of animals in poses which express both their human and animal natures. Virtually every type of animal is photographed - mammals, birds, reptiles, jellyfish... The list is nearly endless. Some are close-ups so the reader isn't aware of what animal it is - as example, there are pictures of hands of apes so close you can see their fingerprints, and you really can see how human they are. Each photo is accompanied with a short exerpt that either adds details of the particular subject (some animals were rescued), or have an environmental message. Each is a study onto itself, and the photo clarity is stunning. The book is enormous and the pages are of a heavier weight. If you, or someone you know, is an animal lover, this book is an absolute must-have.

When I saw this it was a must to have but the price in the bookstore was unreal and then I went to serch on line and again Amazon came thru with their friendly prices. It makes a lovely table book if your into that or just owning it with all the creative and beautiful pictures it is a well deserved gift to give to someone or even yourself.

Animals seen with a different eye. Each photo is a chef-d'oeuvre by itself! The only restriction I have is the size of the book!

This book surpassed my expectations. I bought it as a Christmas gift for a 16-year-old girl, but her whole family and their friends were also overwhelmed by the beauty and delicacy of the photos. It is a real treasure.
