An update by a legend in the field
I've been a follower of William Marshall's approach to the treatment of sexual offenders for many years. This book has a chapter on work with those who deny they committed a crime, something not easy to find in this field. His book is both empirical and humanistic.

Sex Offenders are treatable
I love the positive approach when treating sex offenders so they can be rehabilitated. More providers should provide this treatment.

Trailblazing
This book is written by the team from Rockwood Psychological Services in Canada, which has been successfully treating sex offenders for 40 years. Unlike most other programs, Rockwood has negligible rates of treatment refusal and dropout. And, most importantly, offenders who complete the program are very unlikely to sexually reoffend. What makes this program different is its positive approach to sex offenders. Instead of being confrontational, therapists are trained to use empathy, warmth and respect. Negative labels such as "sex offender," "rapist" or "pedophile" are discouraged. One of the most unusual features of the Rockwood program is its special track for men who deny their offenses. As the chapter on this track describes, therapists do not challenge these offenders, nor do they think admissions are necessary for successful treatment. In fact, it turns out that men who deny offending or offer excuses have lower rates of recidivism overall, perhaps because they don't embrace a criminal identity. For those engaged in treatment, the manual gives loads of practical, tried-and-true advice on how to structure and run a program. For forensic evaluators on the outside looking in, who have watched in mounting horror as iatrogenic practices are systematically mislabeled as "treatment," this book lays out the research that can help you explain real treatment to judges, jurors, and attorneys.Rehabilitating Sexual Offenders is an auspicious debut for the new American Psychological Association series, Psychology, Crime, and Justice, edited by Shadd Maruna.
